Party at the Pantages

It would be hard to imagine how an acoustic show could have so much energy, but that was the case last night when Bruce tore the roof off the Pantages. Two and a half hours of lyrical genius.

11 of the 12 Devils and Dust songs were played, as were a few gems that Bruce fans get tingly all over about, specifically "Incident on 57th Street," from one of his early albums. Bruce played it from the piano, which is always reason to get excited.

The album continues to amaze me. Lyrically, it would be in his top 3. Since many of the songs are stripped down -- and offer a country twinge, which I happen to like -- it may not be as universally popular others among the Bruce community, but if they dismiss it cuz there's no E Street Band accompaniment, I think they're making a big mistake.

Today is actually a sad day. After seeing a 100-something live Springsteen shows — from San Diego to San Francisco, from New Jersey to Worcester, and a few places in between — today marks the first time since 1984 that Bruce has played in L.A. and I haven't been there as he offers up night No. 2 at the Pantages.

I could hang out in front of the Pantages and hope for the miracle ticket — as my friends Dave and Robert landed last night by some good fortune — but I'll head home and relish last night's show. All good things must come to an end.
