Horrible vs. terrible

I was having a discussion with someone talking about which event is worse: the 9/11 attacks or Hurricane Katrina.

What do you think? Why?

While both are horrible tragedies, it depends how you define worse.

Does it make it worse that every life could have been saved during Katrina if people were aided in evacuating and if the government had spent money to reinforce the levies so that the city would have been saved.

Or, do you look at it as, 9-11 was worse because there was no warning.

In both cases, there was a senseless loss of life.

I tend to believe 9-11 was worse because the death and destruction was inflicted by other human beings. The aftermath of Katrina was worse for the same reason.

However, it must be stated that both events could have been avoided with more care from our federal government

Katrina, it's clear, has hit more people and in particular hit more people where they live.

What 9/11 had was the effect of making all of us feel vulnerable. It was worse in that respect. But even that emotional damage probably doesn't add up to that tragedy being worse than Katrina, which had so much localized emotional damage.

It's all plenty, though.
